Poverty in America: 1 in 2 Americans is Poor or Low-Income

The latest census data reveals the increasing prevalence of poverty, shrinking of the middle class high and  high unemployment rates. Safety net programs are helping those in poverty, but for those who are low-income, but are not considered poor enough to qualify for safety net programs such as food stamps, work-related and medical expenses are struggling to make ends meet. The U.S. Conference of Mayors survey released this week, 1 in 4 people needing emergency food assistance did not receive it in 29 different cities across the country.

As state and federal governments are looking to trim budgets and curb debt, vital human service programs that are necessary to the survival of millions of Americans.
